HDMI and Streaming Dongles
How streaming dongles work, which one to buy for UK streaming services, and how HDMI display adapter dongles differ from streaming sticks.
Two types of HDMI dongle
The term “HDMI dongle” covers two very different products that share a form factor:
- Streaming sticks – Devices with their own processor and operating system (Amazon Fire OS, Google TV, Roku OS) that stream content directly from the internet. Examples: Amazon Fire Stick, Google Chromecast with Google TV, Roku Streaming Stick.
- Display adapter dongles – Passive or active adapters that convert a signal from your device to HDMI output. Examples: USB-C to HDMI, Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, Miracast wireless display adapters.
Streaming sticks for UK viewers
The UK streaming landscape in 2026 centres on Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and Paramount+. All major streaming sticks support these services:
- Amazon Fire Stick 4K Max – Best for Prime Video users. Strong Alexa integration. Good 4K HDR support. Competitive price.
- Google Chromecast with Google TV (4K) – Best for YouTube and Google ecosystem. Google TV interface aggregates content across services well.
- Roku Streaming Stick 4K – Simple, platform-neutral interface. No algorithmic promotion of paid content. Good choice if you want to browse all services equally.
- Apple TV 4K – Best performance and Apple ecosystem integration. Significantly more expensive. Worth it only for heavy Apple device users.
4K and HDR considerations
To stream 4K HDR content you need: a 4K streaming dongle, a 4K TV with HDMI 2.0 or later, a broadband connection of at least 25 Mbps, and a subscription tier that includes 4K on your streaming service. Netflix 4K requires the Premium plan. Disney+ includes 4K on all plans. Check requirements before assuming your dongle and subscription will deliver 4K.
Display adapter dongles
If you want to display your laptop or phone screen on a TV or monitor, you need a different type of HDMI dongle – a display adapter. USB-C to HDMI adapters connect modern laptops to HDMI displays. Miracast dongles (like the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter) receive a wireless screen cast from a Windows, Android, or Miracast-compatible device. These do not stream independently – they require a connected source device.
