5G and 4G Dongles: Mobile Broadband in the UK

How mobile broadband dongles work, what speeds to expect from 4G and 5G, and how to choose the right dongle and network for your needs.

What is a mobile broadband dongle?

A 4G or 5G dongle is a USB modem that connects to a mobile network and provides internet access. It works like a very small version of the cellular modem in your phone – insert a SIM card, plug into a USB port, and you have internet wherever there is mobile coverage.

They are used by remote workers who need reliable connectivity away from an office, travellers who want consistent internet without relying on hotel WiFi, people in rural areas with poor fixed broadband, and as a backup connection when primary broadband fails.

Dongle vs MiFi: A USB dongle connects one device. A MiFi device (mobile WiFi router) creates a WiFi hotspot and connects multiple devices. If you only need internet on one laptop, a USB dongle is simpler. If you need to connect a phone, tablet, and laptop simultaneously, a MiFi is better.

4G speeds in the UK

UK 4G average download speeds in 2026 are typically 20-60 Mbps depending on location and network congestion. Peak speeds in good conditions can reach 150 Mbps. Upload speeds are typically 10-20 Mbps. Latency is usually 30-50ms.

4G is sufficient for video calls, HD streaming, and general web browsing. It is not adequate for multiple simultaneous 4K streams or latency-sensitive applications like competitive gaming.

5G speeds in the UK

5G coverage in the UK is concentrated in city centres and major towns. Where it is available, average download speeds are 150-300 Mbps, with peak speeds over 1 Gbps on mmWave 5G (rare in the UK). Latency drops to 10-20ms on Sub-6GHz 5G.

For most users, 5G means fast, reliable internet that is indistinguishable from fixed broadband in good coverage areas. Check coverage maps for your specific locations before committing to a 5G dongle.

Which UK network for a mobile broadband dongle?

The four main UK networks each have different strengths:

  • EE – Largest 4G and 5G coverage in the UK. Generally the best choice if you travel widely or work in rural areas.
  • Vodafone – Strong urban 5G coverage. Good business data packages with SLA options.
  • Three – Often the best value for high-data packages. Good urban coverage, weaker in rural areas.
  • O2 – Solid coverage, strong roaming agreements. Good for European travel.

SIM-free vs network-locked dongles

Network-locked dongles are sold by operators and only work on their network. SIM-free (unlocked) dongles work with any SIM. Always buy SIM-free if you can – you retain flexibility to switch networks or use local SIMs when travelling. Network-locked dongles are often subsidised but tie you to that operator.

Data plans for dongles

Mobile broadband data plans range from pay-as-you-go to monthly rolling contracts to annual agreements. For occasional use, PAYG or a rolling monthly plan makes sense. For regular use, a monthly plan with 50GB or unlimited data is more cost effective. Check whether “unlimited” plans have fair use speed throttling above a certain threshold.
